What is a 5K at a California State Park?
5K stands for 5,000 meters, which is 3 .10685596 miles.
During the Olympics, the Women’s 5000 meter final is scheduled for Friday, August 22, and the Men’s 5000 meter final, will take place on Saturday, August 23. Be sure to mark your calendars to watch athletes from around the world compete to see who can run the fastest 5K in less than 15 minutes.
Most of us cannot run a 5K that fast, or don’t even run, but many of us can still walk or run a 5K.
It’s not about the time, but the effort, as well as the exercise.
For Iowa Avenue’s upcoming Virtual 5K, I’m planning something a little special.
I’ll be doing the Malibu Creek Trail, a 3.5 mile trail within the Malibu Creek State Park. The park was purchased by the State of California in 1974, and then it was divided into three parcels. The parcels originally belonged to Bob Hope, Ronald Reagan, and 20th Century Fox. Although the park is still used for moviemaking, it’s primarily a haven for day hikers and picnickers.
Now Malibu Creek State Park preserves more than 7,000 acres of rugged country in the middle of the Santa Monica Mountains. The Malibu Creek winds through the park. The creek was dammed at the turn of the century to form little Century Lake. The trail along Malibu Creek traverses and is the heart of the state park. It’s a relatively easy and nearly level walk that covers a dramatic rock gorge, Century Lake and several other locales popular with moviemakers.
I’m looking forward to the walk and will provide lots of pictures to share as part of it.
So keep your Calendar marked for our Virtual 5K.
Are there other hikes you and your family have planned?
Fresh air, sunshine, and just getting away are great ways to relax, especially as the summer starts to wind down.
We’ll be featuring additional Virtual walks from California’s State parks, so be sure to keep yourself active during these last few weeks of summer, because
After all, it’s about a healthy lifestyle!
